Vacations in Italy in Umbria and its roundabouts: romantic Terni, holidays in Italy
Thanks to its most famous citizen, S. Valentino, Terni became the "city of love". In its roundabouts you may discover a wild nature with the Marmore cascades, the highest in Europe, and nice Medieval villages as Piediluco, Ferentillo and Cesi. An itinerary in the name of romance and culture.
San Valentino, famous patron of lovers, has gone a long way since he became the first Terni bishop 1800 years ago. Since his mortal rests are kept here, Terni has become the city of all lovers and each year hundreds of future brides and grooms celebrate the Feast of Promise in the church of San Valentino by exchanging a promise of love. We dedicate this itinerery to them and to the discovery of Terni and its marvellous roundabouts rich in natural scenaries.
6 kilometers from Terni on the Valnerina street the Velino river springs 165 meters giving birth to the "horribly beautiful" (as Byron said) Marmore Cascades, the highest in Europe. It formed in 271 B.C. when the Roman consul Curio Dentato opened an artificial canal to avoid the Velino waters to make a swamp of the Rieti plain. To visit the cascade you ought to check the opening times and you should not lose the best view from the upper Byron square.
In the Carsulae archeological excavations, ancient Roman municipium along the Flaminia route, you may see the Forum, the rests of the Basilica and of two twin temples, the theatre and the amphitheatre. Not far you will see Cesi, a Medieval hamlet that preserves a lot of valuable monuments and is formed by a charming labyrinth of tiny alleys, arches and portals that plunge the visitor in that marvellous Middle Age that had in Cesi one of the Umbrian capitals.
